September 4 to 8, 2023
PXL University of Applied Sciences and Arts invites international students, graduates and teachers to participate in the summer course ‘Wilderness & Adventure Therapy’, organized by our PXL-Healthcare Department. This summer course brings you an experience in experiential learning and how to use this method in guidance and therapy with (mental health) clients.
Are you an adventurous type of person? Are you creative and do you like working with new techniques that create new opportunities and focusses on the strenghts of people rather than on their weaknesses and problems? Then this course might be something for you!
In a 5 day international course we would like to introduce you to an inventive way of process based therapy and guidance, using:
- non-clinical but real life based settings.
- adventure education (experiential and inquiry based learning, using real world experiences in which limits play an important role, activities create beneficial stress, dialogue is engaged, action is taken and reflection on possible outcome is made).
- wilderness therapy (therapy in places unknown or unfamiliar for the client, in which he feels ‘loss of control’, so that the situation produces challenges and asks for a creative sollution will it be controled).
- group dynamics to obtain individual results.
The summer course aims to develop 3 different competences:
- coaching and guiding techniques build on experiences (wilderness & adventure), communication, therapeutic and coaching models and therapeutic relationship.
- organisation skills to create specific therapeutic and coaching programs.
- therapeutic transfer skills to help in transferring skills learned by clients to their real life environment.
A maximum of 25 international students or graduates (healthcare, social care, education) are welcome, together with PXL-students from occupational therapy, social work, nursing and midwifery. We will work in a small group to create an intensive course in which the participants use their 24-hours-daily life as a tool. The course will be in English and takes place in Belgium on different locations.
