Health & Safety

Health insurance

Do you have medical costs during you stay in Belgium? If  you have an EHIC, you can recover the costs when you're back home or you can register at a Belgian health fund to get reimbursed faster. Check Formal Arangements for more info about health insurance.

General practitioner, Dentist or other specialists

During your stay in Hasselt or Diepenbeek, it might happen that you get ill. In Belgium you normally don’t go straight to the hospital but you contact a doctor first. This will be a general practitioner (called ‘huisarts’ in Dutch). Only in emergencies or after a referral by a doctor you go to the hospital. You are free to go to whichever general practitioner (GP) you choose. See all availalbe GP's in your neighborhood.

  • Huisartsenhaven, Thonissenlaan 92/2, 3500 Hasselt, tel. 003211226659 (Press 1) Call at 8am, as some free appointments will then be released for the same day.

In the weekend, on holidays and weekdays between 18:00 and 8:00, you can call the medical post next to the Jessa Hospital to make an appointment: tel. 0032 11336533. (address: Huis 9, Stadsomvaart 9,  3500 Hasselt)

You are free to go to whichever dentist you choose. A list of all dentists in Hasselt.

Most dentists don’t have free consultations. Best to always call for an urgent appointment!
If you urgently need a dentist during the weekend or during a holiday, there is an emergency number you can call. They will tell you which dentist is on duty and provide you with the address. Emergency number: 0032 903 399 69  (€1,5/min). Be aware of the fact that not all dentists are ‘conventionalised’. Conventionalised dentists have an agreement with health insurance companies to only charge a certain cost.

Do you need another medical specialist? A general practitioner will give you a referral. Ask the GP for more information.

Emergency services

In case of emergency dial 112. The operator determines what kind of assistance you need and sends a medical team, the fire department and/or the police to come and help you.

The Emergency room is located at Jessa Ziekenhuis (Campus Virga Jesse) Stadsomvaart 11 - 3500 Hasselt. You should only go to the emergency room (called 'Spoed' in Dutch) if you have an urgent illness or injury.
